Mar 09, Douglas rated it it was amazing. Real life that has not been picked and chosen is not as clean as that single persuasive essay with the purpose of showing you how much fun a thing can be. Godfrey Harold Hardy FRS was a prominent English mathematician, known for his achievements in number theory and mathematical analysis. I particularly like the part when he argues why mathematics is beautiful, and what constitutes a beautiful mathematical theorem. One of the Greatest Mathematician of the World! In his notes, Ramanujan had produced groundbreaking new theorems, including some that Hardy stated had ‘defeated [him and his colleagues] completely’, in addition to rediscovering recently proven but highly advanced results.

This is something that English-loving people who hate math should read. He called their collaboration “the one romantic incident in my life. Ultimately, Hardy arrives at the realization that, even though he loves it, math is not “real” the way we recognize it as real, and so, unless he can think of himself as some kind of twisted artist, his life’s work means nothing. The beauty of a mathematical theorem depends a great deal on its seriousness, as even in poetry the beauty of a line may depend to some extent on the significance of the ideas which it contains.

I was fascinated to see a mathematician’s attitude towards real life applications and desires for not giving up.
