I am coming to Heyer in the opposite way, after reading countless romances, including many Regencies. Frederica is the first book I have read by Georgette. After reading Frederica I thanked my lucky stars that Georgette Heyer was such a prolific writer and that she lived a long life. This is one of my favorite Georgette Heyer novels. Thank you again for reviving my memories. The right match will make all the difference in the family fortunes, and save Frederica and her family from genteel poverty. And stop talking about money. Frederica remained calm in times of stress, but knew when to laugh things off.
I get bored with Heyer’s descriptions of clothes, but here they are balanced with the craziness the Merrivilles bring into Lord Alverstoke’s life.
Under ordinary circumstances he is more than happy to leave the decision-making to Frederica. You are so paying for this, Charles.
Fortunately they bring out the best in each other, and each becomes a better person as they fall in love.
The family head, due to her parents’ death, is year-old Frederica. The cast is the Marquis of Alverstoke, who would spend the whole book like this if he could get away from the Merrivales long enough. And, try as he would, he could discover no reason for this uncomfortable change in himself. The reason why Alverstoke agreed to sponsor the Merrivales to whom he is not related at all, and only connected through two marriages, as he points outis a major hoot in itself. They boys are also very differents, Jessamy is an interesting boy, and Felix an engaging scamp.
I love the thrill of the plot and the young Lord who will help his poorer relatives. I loved Frederica and have re-read it many times and enjoy it more each time. I look forward to reading this book again! Both sisters expect him to pay fully for the privilege of hosting their coming out at his mansion.
